It's not as if they're not going to ask you to translate "Louie, Louie" into Latin. At least I hope not.

There are a lot of people wringing their hands over the hundreds of years it's going to take them to learn Latin pronunciation and rubrics. An outside observer would surely think Catholics were either suffering from dimwittedness or a serious lack of self-confidence.
This is an excerpt from a story out of Savannah, GA. (Great town, incidentally.)

"The bishop represents more than 73,000 Roman Catholics who make up less than 3 percent of the population in south Georgia.

"Many priests know little or any Latin hieroglyphics. It will be a challenge, and in some cases they may not wish to celebrate the extraordinary form of the Roman rite perform brain surgery," he said.

The "ordinary" Mass celebrated in each culture's native language around the world will remain the predominant style of worship, said Savannah Diocese spokeswoman Barbara D. King.

"No matter which form of the rite is used, it is essential that the celebration of Mass be one of great reverence in harmony with the rubrics (directives) which apply to each form," Boland said.

The move was good news for Maher, a conservative Catholic who approached the bishop in 2002 about granting a local Latin Mass.

Boland allowed the service to take place four times a year, led by O'Neill and the late Rev. Herbert Wellmeier.

As demand grew, Boland permitted the service to expand.

At least 60 followers now attend the Savannah Deanery Latin Mass, which takes place at 1 p.m. Sunday every other month at Nativity of Our Lord Church in Thunderbolt.

"Our bishop J. Kevin Boland has been sensitive to the pastoral needs of the faithful," Maher said. "We are very fortunate to have been granted this Mass in the Savannah Diocese and fortunate as well to have our bishop to take the necessary steps to move forward with the Motu Proprio of Pope Benedict XVI."

Diocesan staff are aware of only three priests in south Georgia who have the training required to lead the Mass teach quantum physics.

O'Neill will be in charge of arranging training for priests interested in conducting the old Mass calculating their Bennigan's bill using Chinese arithmetic.

"It's a long process," King said. "They would either have to already know Latin rocket science or have studied it."

Known officially as the Tridentine Mass, traditional Latin Mass, it was the standard style of worship of the Catholic Church from 1570 to 1969, when Vatican II replaced it in favor of modernizing the Church allowed for the Mass to be said in the vernacular, resulting in the glorious springtime which has occurred in the Church in the last 40 years."
